Books Worth Reading
These are some of my favorites. All very accessible and easy to read.
Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin
A good starting point. Thorough, encouraging, and engaging, I learn more each time I read it. Ina May has changed many lives. Her first book Spiritual Midwifery (also amazing) helped to start the modern midwifery movement in this country.
The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer
This book lays out all the evidence available regarding many of the choices that pregnant and birthing moms must make. It lists all the pros and cons of most common procedures, tests, and other interventions, teaches you how to avoid the unnecessary ones, and makes sure you know your options.
The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin
A great book for dads (and moms, friends, and partners) who want to learn more about how to support a woman in labor.
Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding by Ina May Gaskin
If you have any reservations about breastfeeding, this book will give you confidence and conviction. Breast is best! Also written in Ina May's witty, personal, and touching style.
The Natural Pregnancy Book: Herbs, Nutrition, and Other Holistic Choices By Aviva Jill Romm
Aviva has been a midwife and herbalist for decades, and recently became an M.D. as well. She gives great overviews of what your body needs in pregnancy, and recommendations that make herbs and a healthy diet accessible to everyone.
